Generalized habituation of concept stimuli in toddlers.

چکیده
Look ng tines of 3 6 children were recorded during subjectconl-rolled presentation of slides. Habituation was demonstrated over re,peated presentati. of 6 slides from a single conceptual category (e.q., animals). In an rilmediate generalization test the six habituatld sliCes were intermixed Nith 6 unfamiliar, but similar slides f -. the sale cateqor'y nd 6 slides from a novel catego.y (g., fruits). Mean tookIn g times were she test for familiar slides, longer for categorically similar slides, and longest for categorically novel slides. Females showed gene-rallzed h bituation from the fa lifer slideS to the categorically similar slides, but looked significantly longer at those from the novel category. Males l_-ked significantly longer at new slides from either the similar or the novel category than at the fanillar slides, but on unfamiliar slides did not significantly discriminate b_tween the similar and novel categori Generzlized Hatitu tion of Concept St:mul: in Toddlers Patricia J. Habituation and maternal encouragement of attention in infancy as predictors of toddler language, play, and representational competence.
In a longitudinal study, infants' habituation and mothers' encouragement of attention were assessed at 5 months, and toddlers' language comprehension, language production, and pretense play and mothers' encouragement of attention were assessed at 13 months. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the unique contributions of infant habituation and maternal stimulation to toddlers' cogni...
متن کاملLimited attentional bias for faces in toddlers with autism spectrum disorders.
CONTEXT Toddlers with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) exhibit poor face recognition and atypical scanning patterns in response to faces. It is not clear if face-processing deficits are also expressed on an attentional level. Typical individuals require more effort to shift their attention from faces compared with other objects. This increased disengagement cost is thought to reflect deeper proc...
متن کاملTemporal coding mediates discrimination of "bitter" taste stimuli by an insect.
The mechanisms that mediate discriminative taste processing in insects are poorly understood. We asked whether temporal patterns of discharge from the peripheral taste system of an insect (Manduca sexta caterpillars; Sphingidae) contribute to the discrimination of three "bitter" taste stimuli: salicin, caffeine, and aristolochic acid. The gustatory response to these stimuli is mediated exclusiv...
متن کاملNovelty, conditioning and attentional bias to sexual rewards
The Internet provides a large source of novel and rewarding stimuli, particularly with respect to sexually explicit materials. Novelty-seeking and cue-conditioning are fundamental processes underlying preference and approach behaviors implicated in disorders of addiction. Here we examine these processes in individuals with compulsive sexual behaviors (CSB), hypothesizing a greater preference fo...
متن کاملRefractory period and habituation of acoustic startle response in rats.
The time course of the recovery cycle (refractory period) of the acoustic startle response in rats was determined. The refractory effect was shown to be highly dependent upon the interval between two startle stimuli but independent of the intensity of the stimuli at a given interval, provided that the intensity of both stimuli was the same. A model based on summation of refractory effects to re...
